When it comes to fashion, no other music genre celebrates it more than hip-hop.
In fact, in the past five years, the use of the word “fashion” in rap lyrics has doubled, according to the website Genius, which contains the world’s biggest collection of song lyrics and is a comprehensive database for all things music.
It has become nearly common practice for a rap artist to hit it big on the charts one day and then seemingly drop their own fashion line the next.
Artists not only wear their own streetwear but everything from mall brands to high fashion designers. Here, then, is a look at some hip-hop artists and the many different style of streetwear fashions they’ve been repping.
Donald Glover (aka) Childish Gambino
Donald Glover truly is a modern-day Renaissance Man. As an actor, activist, comedian, and singer, Glover’s meteoritic rise began as the loveable Troy Barnes on the show Community. He’s also taken a turn on Saturday Night Live following the release of Gambino’s “This is America” video and Solo: A Star Wars Story where he had a starring role as fan favorite Lando Calrissian.
Fashion-wise, Glover eschews jeans, choosing instead to don pleated trousers or some slightly tapered chinos worn with slip-on shoes minus socks. Knitted polos are also regularly worn as are several gold chains. Glover counts Dior, Gucci, Band of Outsiders, and Dolce & Gabbana as some of his fave fashion brands.
A king of the hip-hop genre, Snoop Dogg is among the best rap artists and performers to grace the stage. A man of many talents, Snoop is a long-time advocate for marijuana legislation and was a pot trail “blazer” long before legalization efforts and it was hip to be a burner.
He joined such musical icons as Willie Nelson and Jamie Johnson in celebrating weed in song (“Roll Me Up”) and calling for arcane pot laws to be rescinded. Snoop is truly dope and speaks his streetwear style as a brand ambassador for Oakland-based Dope ERA. Last fall, when he received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, Snoop showed up looking quite dapper in a camel coat, a $1,400 Gucci jacquard wool leatherneck sweater and, in tribute to his roots, a Death Row Records gold chain necklace.
Logic has an uncanny knack for marketing, having recently released a novel titled Supermarket along with a new album and a line of streetwear of the same name to celebrate the book’s arrival. He’s been seen wearing that line along with his self-titled Logic brand. Logic tends to lean toward the casual side of fashion by touting a multitude of labels, including All Saints, Diamond Supply Co., Everyday and Thrasher streetwear brands before the camera lens of adoring fans and paparazzi alike.
The golden boy of rap, Drake’s fashion style, especially his OVO label, is just as sweet as a ticket to one of his shows.
Unlike other artists who lend their name or celebrity to an apparel line, Drake’s OVO shops celebrate community, the idea that all who enter one of his shops is a member of the OVO tribe. Drake and business partner Oliver El-Khatib are building a streetwear empire that’s likely to clear $50 million in sales this year, according to published reports, and Drake wearing his own Owls gear in public surely does not hurt sales, either.
When not repping his own brand, Drake is comfortable in high fashion, too.
The Grammy-winner was recently photographed wearing an outfit that reportedly was worth nearly a cool $1 million. He was impressive in a sleek suit, a custom Brioni jacket worth $11,000, a black Tom Ford turtleneck worth $2,000, and a pair of Tom Ford trousers ringing in at $1,000.
While his threads were nowhere near secondhand, his accessories were what made the ensemble really skyrocket in price. Drake donned Tom Ford crocodile shoes worth $15,000, a custom chain from Jason of Beverly Hills worth $200,000 and a Richard Mille RM 69 watch worth $750,000.
He showed he was down-to-earth, however, as he flashed two bracelets, one from his son and one given to him by a fan, adding that those items were “priceless.” The rest of his outfit, however, rang in at a whopping $979,000.
It may not have been worth $1 million, but Travis Scott celebrated the release of “Power is Power,” a new song with The Weeknd and SZA for a Game of Thrones soundtrack, by wearing an outfit that was right at home in the Seven Kingdoms.
Travis took to Instagram to post his Game Of Thrones-inspired garb, delivering on a very on-theme caption: “House of Flame, Son of lord Jacques B Webster the 1st, Husband of the Goddess K? , Protector of the Seven Kingdoms, Blatt.”
Posing in front of his matte grey Bentley, the rapper flexed layers of medieval chainmail armor, textured protective long sleeves and a metal breastplate decked with brown leather straps and a bronze-looking arrow crest. He finished off the era-appropriate look with leather pants and black boots, not forgetting the subtle touch of bling on his fingers.
When not going Medieval, Scott was recently spotted modeling Jordan 1 OG Chicago, (1985), Kapital studded plaid skinny jeans and a vintage Nine Inch Nails T-shirt, and he is seen quite often wearing Astroworld, his streetwear brand.
With his distinct face tattoos and unique look, it was an easy call to review the sartorial style of this artist. Always colorful and fun, Post Malone is a big supporter of small, independent artists, choosing to wear their labels.
He’s also worn a number of Western-style suits with snakes on them because he hails from Texas and, in the words of his stylist, he’s “a cowboy at heart who loves country music.” At the 2019 Grammys, Malone wore a suit that was inspired by Jimmy Page, a vintage dragon suit, that made Malone look quite regal. Whatever Malone wears, he wears it well.
Maybe it’s because they share the same numerical designation or maybe it’s that the weirder the collab, the more people will want it, but rapper 21 Savage is the face of the new collaboration between Honda motorsport and Forever 21.
Of course, 21 Savage rode dirt bikes and ATVs growing up so, for the hard-core fans, it comes as no surprise.
When not sporting motorsports gear, 21 Savage is quite comfy, thank you, repping his own brand as well. He’s been seen in West Hollywood modeling his “I Am > I was” line, inspired by the album of the same name. He was wearing an I Am hoodie, sweatpants, and a pair of Jordan 1 Retro High Spider-Man Origin Story sneakers. His I Am line comes in hoodies, jerseys, T-shirts, and a wide variety of accessories.
Whether chillin’ in an H &M tie-dye T-shirt and Balenciaga Saga sunglasses or hittin’ the town in Dolce and Gabbana, Swae Lee’s fashion runs a wide gamut.
Lee was recently seen outside a club in West Hollywood wearing matching black and white Dolce & Gabbana Square Logo Motif Trousers, Dolce & Gabbana Square Logo Motif Shirt, and a Dolce & Gabbana Baseball Cap.
We definitely saved the best for last, focusing on the styles of two of the biggest female artists whose styles never disappoint and always grab your attention.
Cardi B loves living the life of luxury, so it comes as no surprise that one of her go-to brands is Balenciaga. She was out and about wearing the brand’s windowpane-checked leather cuissard stiletto boots, a Balenciaga logo jacket, and carrying a ville logo leather satchel.
Cardi was smokeshow at the recent reveal of her new collab with the Fashion Nova label. She wore Gianvito Rossi 100 Leather Slingback Pumps, and Fashion Nova Check The Resume Tweed, consisting of a revealing short skirt and matching jacket.
